Scaling, polishing & whitening

Professional cleaning and teeth whitening.

Scaling removes hardened plaque and tartar that brushing can't; polishing leaves teeth smooth and clean. Teeth whitening is available for stains and discolouration.

About scaling, polishing & whitening

Even with careful brushing, plaque hardens over time into tartar (calculus), which a toothbrush can't remove. Tartar irritates the gums, causing bleeding, bad breath and eventually gum disease. Scaling removes it from above and just below the gumline, and polishing leaves the teeth smooth so plaque builds up more slowly.

Professional cleaning is quick and is usually recommended every six months, though people prone to tartar or gum problems may benefit from more frequent visits. It's also a good opportunity to catch cavities and other problems early.

Teeth whitening lightens stains caused by tea, coffee, tobacco and age. It works on natural teeth only — not on crowns, veneers or fillings — so it's best planned after an examination. Some temporary sensitivity is common and settles within a few days.
